The number one fear with floating shelves is hitting nothing but drywall. The good news: with the right anchors, you can safely mount shelves capable of holding 30–50 lbs without ever finding a stud.
Choosing the Right Anchor
For drywall installation without studs, toggle bolts are your best option. They expand behind the drywall and distribute load across a wide area. For heavier loads, snap toggles provide even greater holding power.
Step-by-Step Installation
- Mark shelf position with a level — don't eyeball it
- Drill holes at bracket positions using the correct bit size for your anchors
- Insert toggle bolts and tighten until snug — don't overtighten
- Mount bracket, check level again, then attach shelf
- Test load gradually before placing heavy items
For shelves over 36 inches wide, aim for at least three bracket points. For heavier loads (books, plants, ceramics), always try to hit at least one stud per shelf if possible.
