Decluttering doesn't have to be a months-long ordeal. With the right system and a firm weekend commitment, most people can meaningfully transform their home in just two days.
The Weekend Method
Saturday morning: Tackle the highest-friction room first — usually the bedroom or kitchen. Remove everything from surfaces and drawers, then only return what you actively use and love.
Saturday afternoon: Move through living areas. The rule: if you haven't touched it in 12 months and it has no sentimental value, it goes.
Sunday: Closets, storage spaces, and paper. These take longer than expected — leave a full day.
- Use three boxes: Keep, Donate, Trash
- Don't organize what you're going to get rid of — decide first, organize after
- Take donation boxes to the car immediately so they don't creep back inside
- Photograph sentimental items before donating — the memory lives in the photo, not the object
The goal isn't a minimalist aesthetic. It's a home where everything has a place and nothing is hiding from you.
